Silver diamine fluoride, often called SDF, is a minimally invasive liquid treatment that can help stop or slow certain cavities in children. Dr. Carroll has used SDF as part of her pediatric dental treatment options for years.

Is SDF right for your child?

1

When SDF can help

SDF can be particularly useful when immediate drilling and restoration is not the best first step for a young child or a child who has difficulty tolerating dental treatment.

2

Not for every cavity

It is not appropriate for every cavity. Dr. Carroll considers the location and depth of decay, symptoms, the child’s age and cooperation, and the long-term plan before recommending it.

3

What parents should know

Parents should know that SDF darkens the decayed portion of the tooth. Dr. Carroll discusses that cosmetic effect as well as the expected benefit and follow-up before treatment.
