Dental sealants for children create a protective coating over the chewing surfaces of adult teeth to help reduce the chance that a cavity will develop in deep grooves and pits. Those areas can collect plaque and food and may be difficult to clean even for children who brush well.
1
Targeted prevention
Dr. Carroll considers the shape of the tooth, the child’s cavity history, age, home care, and overall risk before recommending a sealant. The goal is targeted prevention, not automatically sealing every tooth.
2
Checked at routine visits
Sealants are checked during routine visits because they can wear or chip over time and may occasionally need repair.
